Av. Insurgentes Sur
Insurgentes Sur spans approximately 19 kilometers across Mexico City, running from north to south. It’s a significant thoroughfare easily navigated, as most of it is intersected by Line One of the Metrobús.
Traversing from north to south, it passes through several of the city’s key central neighborhoods and districts:
- Zona Rosa & Colonia Juarez
- Condesa and Roma
- Del Valle
- San Angel & Chimalistac
- University City (UNAM)
- Cuicuilco & Tlalpan Forest
- Historic Center of Tlalpan
Given its length, exploring it entirely on foot may be impractical, but it’s flanked by numerous historical and cultural landmarks, making it an enticing route to discover.
Angel de la Independencia
The Angel of Independence frequently serves as a hub for celebrations following football matches or similar international competitions. It’s also a common starting point for significant protests, marches, and annual parades.
Officially named the Independence Monument, it has stood watch over its own roundabout on Paseo de la Reforma since Mexico’s Independence centenary celebrations in 1910.
Glorieta de las Mujeres que Luchan
The Women Who Fight roundabout, situated along Paseo de la Reforma, has emerged as a prominent platform for women advocating for their rights and combating violence in Mexico City. Over time, it has evolved into a symbolic gathering and protest site utilized by feminist organizations, families of missing women, and victims of femicide.
Monumento a Cuauhtémoc
The sculpture’s base is encircled with the names of Cuitláhuac, Cacama, Tetlepanquetzal, and Coanacoch, who were allies of Cuauhtémoc in resisting the Spanish invaders. Cuitláhuac is particularly highlighted due to his role in what’s deemed as the most pivotal victory against the Spanish.
Monumento a la Revolución
The Monument to the Mexican Revolution stands as one of Mexico City’s most iconic symbols, reflecting the complexity and ambiguity inherent in the historical event it seeks to honor. Originally intended as the dome of a Palace for the Federal Legislative Branch, construction began in 1910 with the laying of the first stone by Porfirio Díaz, although plans for the project had been in motion since 1897. However, Díaz’s tenure was swiftly coming to an end, as the Revolution of 1910 loomed on the horizon. Just a year later, after over three decades of nearly absolute power, Díaz was ousted from office.
Today, the monument and its underground museum serve as a mausoleum for the revolution’s fallen heroes. Within its walls rest Francisco “Pancho” Villa, Francisco I. Madero, Plutarco Elías Calles, Venustiano Carranza, and Lázaro Cárdenas.
Zona Rosa
Since its inception in the 1950s, Zona Rosa has been a hub of bohemian and alternative culture, attracting artists, intellectuals, amateurs, students, professionals, young entrepreneurs, and anyone seeking a vibrant atmosphere and tolerance in this once trendy neighborhood.
