The Complete Guide to Roma Norte
Peculiar, vibrant and full of color and life, Roma Norte, is one of the best neighborhoods in Mexico City.
This is one of the most emblematic parts of Mexico City due to its cultural and intellectual environment.
In the 20th century, ostentatious buildings, mansions, and palaces were built with architectural styles such as art nouveau, eclectic, art deco, and neocolonial.
The most common were buildings with a pancoupé finish, old facades, gates, and carved quarries, topped by medallions or shields that bore the family’s initials or the noble shield.
This neighborhood has a cultural and bohemian atmosphere, not only because of its educational centers and galleries but also because of those great personalities who lived there, such as Pita Amor, Fernando del Paso, Leonora Carrington, and William Burroughs, who were inspired by their streets to carry out their works.
Currently, its buildings are protected by the National Institute of Fine Arts as Architectural Heritage, so they cannot be modified or demolished.
Some of the most notable are the El Parián commercial passage, the Cibeles Fountain, the Balmori building, Casa Lamm, the Río de Janeiro building, and the Renacimiento Institute.
It is considered one of the best 50 neighborhoods in the world, for “being trapped between eras”.
