The Complete Guide to Colonia Juárez

April 21, 2024

The formation of Colonia Juárez as it is now known began at the end of the 19th century and its maximum architectural development occurred at the end of the Revolution, in the 1920s.

This is considered one of the most touristy neighborhoods in Mexico City. This neighborhood offers us architectural beauty, history, and tradition; through its streets, previously full of large residences, surrounded by houses and European-style apartments, today, hotel complexes are protected most importantly, as well as office towers for various commercial activities.

These are some things and places you can go during your stay in this neighborhood:

Traversing from north to south, it passes through several of the city’s key central neighborhoods and districts:

Monumento a Cuauhtémoc

The sculpture’s base is encircled with the names of Cuitláhuac, Cacama, Tetlepanquetzal, and Coanacoch, who were allies of Cuauhtémoc in resisting the Spanish invaders. Cuitláhuac is particularly highlighted due to his role in what’s deemed as the most pivotal victory against the Spanish.

Monumento a la Revolución

The Monument to the Mexican Revolution stands as one of Mexico City’s most iconic symbols, reflecting the complexity and ambiguity inherent in the historical event it seeks to honor. Originally intended as the dome of a Palace for the Federal Legislative Branch, construction began in 1910 with the laying of the first stone by Porfirio Díaz, although plans for the project had been in motion since 1897. However, Díaz’s tenure was swiftly coming to an end, as the Revolution of 1910 loomed on the horizon. Just a year later, after over three decades of nearly absolute power, Díaz was ousted from office.

Today, the monument and its underground museum serve as a mausoleum for the revolution’s fallen heroes. Within its walls rest Francisco “Pancho” Villa, Francisco I. Madero, Plutarco Elías Calles, Venustiano Carranza, and Lázaro Cárdenas.
